Wolf Fish - Great Carr - St. Abbs
This is George a Wolf Fish, or wolf eel, or more accurately Anarchichas Lupus and was taken near the base of The Green Carr. This rock is a popular dive site just off St Abbs harbour wall. Generally they live at depths of 60m->300m and are rarely seen.
Unusually Wolf-fish can be found regularly all along this part of the coast and are often seen by divers. This specimen is less than ½m long, but they can grow to 1.5m. As can be seen here they feed on urchins, mussels, and other mollusks which they are able to crush with their enormous jaws and teeth. Like sharks these teeth are replaced annually as they are lost or worn out.
